What is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is a diagnostic procedure used to identify allergic reactions to specific substances, such as pollen, dust, food, or medications. It helps determine the allergens causing symptoms and guides appropriate treatment or avoidance strategies. Common allergy tests include skin prick tests, blood tests (IgE testing), and patch tests.

Why Allergy Testing is Needed?

  • Pollen and Dust Mites: Can trigger seasonal or year-round allergies.
  • Pet Dander: Proteins found in pet fur, saliva, or skin can cause allergies.
  • Mold Exposure: Mold spores can trigger respiratory issues.
  • Medications: Some antibiotics and pain relievers can cause allergic reactions.
  • Unexplained Chronic Symptoms: Persistent issues like recurrent skin rashes, digestive problems.
  • Prevent Severe Reactions: Identifying allergies early can help prevent life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis, allowing individuals to take necessary precautions and avoid dangerous allergens.

Symptoms of Allergies

  • Eye Irritation: Watery, red, or itchy eyes.
  • Skin Reactions: Rashes, itching, redness, or hives.
  • Respiratory Issues: Sneezing, runny or blocked nose, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
  • Digestive Problems: Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, or diarrhea (in food allergies).
  • Swelling: Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue in severe cases.
  • Anaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reaction): Life-threatening reaction with difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, and dizziness. Immediate medical attention is required.
